Abbott Architect c8000 vs. ci8200: Chemistry-Only or Integrated Chemistry and Immunoassay?
When a laboratory outgrows a mid-volume chemistry analyzer, the next question is rarely just "how fast?" It is also "how many platforms do we want to run?" Splitting chemistry and immunoassay across separate systems means separate operator interfaces, separate sample routing, and separate reports for the same patient.
Abbott's Architect family answers that question with two closely related floor-model systems: the Architect c8000, a dedicated high-volume chemistry analyzer, and the Architect ci8200, which pairs that same chemistry engine with an immunoassay module. Both belong to the original Architect generation, and both are still widely used in hospital and reference laboratories.
Abbott Architect c8000: Dedicated High-Volume Chemistry
The c8000 is a chemistry-only analyzer testing over 80 assays at up to 1,200 tests per hour. It is a partially open reagent system, so laboratories can use alternative reagents on certain tests, which helps control cost per test. Its menu covers electrolytes, enzymes, blood sugar, metabolites, lipids, therapeutic drug monitoring, and drugs of abuse, making it a strong core-lab workhorse for facilities whose immunoassay needs are already handled elsewhere.
Abbott Architect ci8200: Chemistry and Immunoassay on One Platform
The ci8200 combines the c8000 chemistry system with the i2000 immunoassay system, testing 128 assays at up to 1,400 tests per hour combined. It accepts serum, plasma, urine, CSF, and whole blood, supports direct STAT sample loading, and needs as little as 1 μL of sample for some tests. Chemistry and immunoassay results run from a single platform, which simplifies training and gives clinicians one consolidated view of a patient's panel.
How the Throughput Adds Up
The ci8200's 1,400 tests per hour is the c8000's 1,200 chemistry tests plus roughly 200 immunoassay tests per hour from the i2000 module. In practice, that means chemistry capacity is the same on both systems. What the ci8200 adds is immunoassay capability, not extra chemistry speed. Labs that only need chemistry volume gain nothing from paying for the second module.
Choosing Between the Two
Choose the c8000 if your immunoassay testing is already covered by another analyzer, or if your workload is overwhelmingly chemistry. Choose the ci8200 if you want to bring immunoassay in-house on the same platform, or consolidate two aging analyzers into one connected system. Keep in mind that the ci8200 is a two-module floor system, so plan bench and floor space accordingly. Labs with lower volume may also want to look at the smaller Architect ci4100, which integrates chemistry and immunoassay at 900 tests per hour.
Match Your Platform to Your Real Test Mix
At Diamond Diagnostics, we help laboratories size their chemistry and immunoassay capacity to the tests they actually run, not the ones a brochure suggests.
Whether you need the dedicated chemistry throughput of the Abbott Architect c8000 or the integrated capability of the Abbott Architect ci8200, every system we supply undergoes our complete Down-To-Frame® refurbishment protocol, including full disassembly, component-level restoration, and multi-level quality control validation, so your lab gets day-one analytical confidence.
