Siemens Advia Centaur XP vs. CP: Choosing the Right Immunoassay System for Your Lab's Volume
Immunoassay capacity is easy to get wrong. Buy too little and the morning run spills into the afternoon, pushing turnaround time (TAT) past what clinicians expect. Buy too much and you pay for floor space and onboard reagents you never use.
The Siemens ADVIA Centaur line answers that problem with two systems that run the same assays: the floor-model Centaur XP and the benchtop Centaur CP. Choosing between them comes down to volume, menu breadth, and space.
What the Two Systems Share
Both analyzers run the same ADVIA Centaur ReadyPack reagents, so assay menus, protocols, and reagent stock carry over from one to the other. Both use disposable pipette tips to prevent sample-to-sample carryover, offer automatic dilution, repeat, and reflex testing, and support STAT sampling.
1. Siemens Advia Centaur XP: Built for Higher Volume
The Centaur XP runs up to 240 tests per hour in batch or random-access mode. It accepts up to 180 samples in continuous loading using universal 5-position racks, has a dedicated STAT position that accepts samples at any time, and holds 30 onboard reagents. Siemens lists connectivity to its Aptio, ADVIA, StreamLAB, and VersaCell automation solutions, so the XP can grow into an automated line. It is a floor model, listed by Diamond at about 184 cm wide and 104 cm deep.
2. Siemens Advia Centaur CP: Mid-Volume in a Benchtop Footprint
The Centaur CP runs up to 180 tests per hour in batch or random-access mode. Its sample compartment holds 84 samples and stays accessible during a run, and loading and unloading samples and supplies does not pause the system. It carries 15 refrigerated reagents with automatic mixing, plus a 10-position compartment for ancillaries such as diluents. Siemens cites a 400-test walkaway capacity, a minimum one-hour walkaway time when fully loaded, and TAT as short as 15 minutes for most assays. Diamond lists the benchtop unit at about 107 cm wide and 74 cm deep.
3. How to Choose
Choose the XP if your daily volume is high, you run a wide menu that needs the 30-reagent capacity, or you expect to connect to laboratory automation. Choose the CP if you need mid-volume capacity in a smaller footprint, or a second analyzer to handle STAT and overflow work next to a primary system. Because both use the same reagents, adding a CP to a lab that already runs an XP does not require a second reagent line.
