Beckman AU5811 vs. AU5821: High-Capacity Chemistry for the Largest Core Labs
When a hospital network or reference laboratory processes chemistry samples by the tens of thousands per day, the difference between analyzer tiers isn't a minor spec sheet detail, it's the difference between predictable turnaround time and a daily backlog. Beckman Coulter's AU5800 series was built specifically for that scale, and two models sit at the top of the range for labs that have outgrown mid-volume systems: the AU5811 and the AU5821.
Both are floor-model, open-reagent chemistry systems built for automation-ready core labs. But their throughput and configuration are different enough that choosing the wrong one means either bottlenecking your busiest hours or overbuilding for volume you don't have.
Beckman AU5811: High-Volume, Automation-Ready Chemistry
The AU5811 delivers up to 2,900 tests per hour with a single ISE flow cell, supporting 91 tested assays across a 400-sample load capacity and 54 onboard cooled reagent positions. With a 4-second sample cycle time and automatic sample handling, it's built for reference labs and large hospital core labs running heavy, consistent daily chemistry volume without needing the absolute ceiling of AU5800 throughput.
Beckman AU5821: Maximum Throughput for the Busiest Labs
The AU5821 pushes further, delivering up to 4,900 tests per hour with a single ISE flow cell configuration, the same 400-sample capacity as the AU5811, but with 108 onboard cooled reagent positions, nearly double the AU5811's reagent capacity. That combination is built for the largest commercial and hospital reference labs facing the heaviest daily chemistry backlogs, where minimizing manual reagent restocking during a run is as important as raw test speed.
Choosing Between the Two
Both systems share the AU5800 platform's core reliability, automation compatibility, and open-reagent flexibility. The decision comes down to actual daily volume: if your lab consistently runs near AU5811 capacity, the AU5821's larger reagent bay and near-double throughput ceiling gives you meaningful headroom for continued growth. If your volume is high but not at the extreme end of the spectrum, the AU5811 delivers the same platform reliability at a lower acquisition cost.
Scale to the Volume You Actually Run
At Diamond Diagnostics, we help laboratories match chemistry capacity to real-world daily demand rather than guesswork.
Whether your facility needs the high-volume performance of the Beckman AU5811 or the maximum-throughput capacity of the Beckman AU5821, every system we supply undergoes our complete Down-To-Frame® refurbishment protocol, ensuring reliable, audit-ready performance from day one.
