Siemens Dimension EXL 200 vs. EXL with LM: Choosing the Right Integrated Chemistry and Immunoassay System
Running chemistry on one analyzer and immunoassays on another means splitting samples, stocking two reagent areas, and training staff on two systems. For low- to mid-sized laboratories, that duplication costs more in time and bench space than it does in equipment.
The Siemens Dimension EXL family was built to remove it. Both the Siemens Medical Dimension EXL 200 and the Dimension EXL with LM integrate chemistry and immunoassay testing on one platform using LOCI® advanced chemiluminescence technology. Choosing between them comes down to menu capacity, loading convenience, and floor space.
What the Two Systems Share
Siemens lists the same throughput profile for both: up to 440 photometric tests, 187 ISE tests, and 167 immunoassay tests per hour, with overall throughput of up to roughly 625 tests per hour depending on the test mix. On the Dimension EXL platform, Siemens lists electrolyte results in under a minute and high-sensitivity troponin I in about 10 minutes. Because both systems use the same LOCI technology, labs can mix chemistry and immunoassay tests in one reagent area and run all assays from a single sample tube.
1. Siemens Dimension EXL 200: Compact and Efficient
Siemens positions the EXL 200 for small- to mid-sized laboratories. It is the more compact of the two, about 56 inches wide including the LOCI module. Diamond lists it with 44 reagent positions, on-board refrigeration, STAT sampling, automated sample handling, an open reagent system, and a minimum sample size of 2 μL. For labs with limited floor space and a moderate menu, it delivers integrated testing without a large footprint.
2. Siemens Dimension EXL with LM: More Menu, Less Interruption
The EXL with LM carries 91 assays onboard, and Siemens notes that technologists can load 18 reagents at once without pausing the system. It supports uninterrupted processing when loading and unloading samples, reagents, controls, and calibrators, with STAT sampling from any position and about four minutes to a first result on a basic panel. Siemens positions it for mid-volume, STAT, and satellite laboratories. The trade-off is space: it is about 82 inches wide, compared with 56 inches for the EXL 200.
3. How to Choose
Since the two systems share the same throughput specifications, the decision is not about speed. Choose the EXL 200 if floor space is tight and your onboard menu is modest. Choose the EXL with LM if you run a wider menu, handle frequent STAT or reagent changes, and want to keep the analyzer running while you load.
